There are so many technical terms that we now take for granted when we are buying any commodity e.g.  the miles per gallon of a car (mpg), the memory and speed of a computer, the thermal / energy efficiency of any electrical appliance – all of the above and many, many , more come with some form of certification identifying how well the commodity can be expected to perform.
Surprisingly many people are unaware that when it comes to purchasing a new front door similar legislative requirements also apply to the thermal efficiency of the door which is described as the U-value, where , the lower the value, the more energy efficient it will be. Current legislation requires that all new doors sold and fitted in England & Wales must have a “U” value not exceeding 1.8W/m2K and the lower level of (1.6W/m2K applying in Scotland)
When tested for their Energy efficiency, doors are given a simple A-G rating. A high performance insulated Composite door will have a minimum energy rating of ‘C’ or above  and it is advisable to avoid doors with a rating of ‘D’ or below. The door rating will be influenced by its glazing content.
One of the first composite door manufacturing companies to take advantage of this legislation was Comparison Door Prices supplier- Door-stop- who provide a U Value compliance certificate issued by The British Fenestration Rating Council BFRC (the premier body for thermal certification of glass) with every door they manufacture so both home owners and installers alike can be assured of the required performance of their chosen door. Immediately upon the issue of thermal efficiency certificates and the associated marketing released by the company Door-stop reported an increase in customer awareness and sales, a factor that has also been mirrored with us, where many of our discerning customers now request clarification with regard to the thermal efficiency of the door they intend to purchase.
